Shaolin Kenpo covers the full range of components that comprise a balanced, well-rounded martial art. It offers incredibly effective self-defense training and enhances the practitioner’s concentration, physical fitness, learning ability, confidence, self-discipline and personal motivation as well.
The forms taught in Shaolin Kenpo are referred to as “dances” rather than katas. They are designed to teach students how to apply the techniques, as well as to practice form, speed and balance. The dances are practical and flowing forms that provide a self-regulated cardiovascular workout, develop strength and flexibility throughout the body, and enhance mental concentration.
What distinguishes Shaolin Kenpo from other martial arts is its emphasis on defending against multiple opponents. But there are other unique qualities that set it apart as well. Its focus on technique rather than strength make Shaolin Kenpo an accessible martial art, suitable for all ages and both genders. From the very beginning, students are taught how and where to strike rendering the size of an opponent moot. This emphasis on technique and precision enable students to learn effective self-defense in short order.
A Powerful Defense Art
Shaolin Kenpo techniques focus on multiple-combination strikes incorporating five elements of learning: knowledge, foundation, speed, power and accuracy. The end result is the ability to launch five or more strikes directed at more than one attacker in lightening-fast sequence. Students learn to move and circle quickly and lightly to avoid an opponent, rather than meeting attacks with a solid frontal defense. A basic principle of Shaloin Kenpo is to convert defensive moves into offensive moves with hand strikes that are more circular than linear, arm motions that are sweeping and long range and kicking techniques that are fast and focused on low body targets.
